Starfish Playroom
This is a colourful, tactile room
offering up to 15 of our youngest
babies and children an attractive
and homely place to explore
and play in safety. We have a
staff ratio of 1:3, allowing a high
level of supervision and giving an
excellent range of play experiences.
These include large physical play
apparatus, construction toys to aid
hand-eye co-ordination and
multi-sensory toys to develop
language, touch and vision. We
also use music, both upbeat and
calming.
Messy Play
The Play Station places a strong
emphasis on ‘messy play’, allowing
children to learn valuable sensory
skills through exploration of a range
of textures which demonstrate smell
and taste.
Parents can support these fun and
valuable activities by dressing their
children in suitable, easily washable
play clothes. Play Station T-shirts and
polo-shirts are available to buy from
the Play Station reception.
Sleeping and Changing
There is a separate sleeping room
where babies and toddlers can
sleep undisturbed by playroom
activities. This also enables us to
maintain children’s usual sleeping
patterns. We also have a separate
changing room for nappy changing
and toddler toilet and potty
training. We ask parents to provide
a full changing kit (nappies, wipes,
cream, spare pants and clothes) in
a named bag for use at the nursery. |
Key-Person
Each child has a member of staff
assigned to care for their needs and
support their personal development.
This is done by making and
recording observations and
valuable milestones. Staff talk with
parents on a regular basis to ensure
that routines provide continuity
between home and nursery.
Record keeping
A daily diary of each child’s routine
is kept which records how long they
have slept, when they have been
changed and what they have
eaten. Parents can also see what
activities they have taken part in
during the day.
Meal times.
Meal times are recognised as a very
important experience for babies,
so we aim to be led by the baby’s
own rhythm rather than any existing
nursery routine.
Packed lunches and bottles need
to be brought in on a daily basis,
although dried packet food, baby
jars and juice can be stored in our
kitchen for the week.
Parents are asked to give specific
details of food they would like their
child to eat at particular times and
ensure they are labelled with their
child’s name. High and low chairs
are provided for children who
require them, with most children
sitting at a table together.
Breast feeding mothers are
encouraged to come to the nursery
to feed their baby.
Please note that cups are provided
but bottles and beakers must be
brought in from home.
Parents are asked to refrain from
bringing nuts into the nursery to
prevent the allergic reactions of
others.
