Jellyfish and Seahorse Playrooms
We have two playrooms for children
over 18 months, with an excellent
variety of toys and equipment.
As children love to learn through
exploring natural materials we
have created a large outdoor
area where they can discover the
environment around them. Music
and movement, drama and other
creative activities also feature in our
day.
Additionally we have a computer
with suitable programmes and
software to support learning.
Children aged two to three years
are supported by an adult ratio of
1:4, with a ratio of 1:8 for children
over three years. We can accept up
to 16 children in Jellyfish room and
24 in Seahorse room.
Outings/Special Events
From time-to-time, as part of our activities, we will take groups of children
on outings and trips as well as having visitors of interest come to the
nursery. We keep parents updated of any such events through our regular
newsletter and of course gain permission from them should we wish to take
their children off site.
Some places we have visited this year include St. Cross Court (elderly
people’s home), Foxes Road duck pond, The Pet Shop, College facilities
such as the library and Animal Care centre as well as rural areas around
Newport. There is no additional charge for these outings. |
Meal times
Here at the Play Station Nursery we treat meal times as an important part of
a child’s day and a chance to sit and eat with adults and friends in a
sociable and relaxed atmosphere.
We encourage healthy eating and ask parents to support this if they are
providing their child with a packed lunch.
Alternatively, children are offered healthy meals prepared and cooked in
the College kitchens and brought across to the nursery each day. Menus
are available at the nursery. These meals need to be ordered and paid for
in advance at a cost of £1.60 per day.
Learning & Development
At the Play Station we advocate
a child-centred learn-throughplay
approach as supported
by Government guidelines and
frameworks. All children have
a progress profile, with written
observations identifying milestones
and stages of development
reached. This is completed by the
child’s Key-Person and can be
viewed by their parents at any time.
A daily diary is also completed
in Jellyfish room each day by an
assigned member of staff, showing
events of the day, meals eaten,
sleep times and toileting.
As they develop their skills, children
aged three to five years will be
observed and assessed and profiles
will outline the six areas of learning
covered. These include Personal,
Social and Emotional Development,
Communication, Language
and Literacy, Mathematical
Development, Knowledge and
Understanding of the World,
Physical Development and Creative
Development. Parents are asked to
add any comments they wish and
ensure the profile is brought in for us
to complete each time their child
attends.
Quiet Rooms
There are two comfortable quiet
rooms, equipped with soft cushions
and beanbags. These areas are set
aside for story and singing times, but
any child needing a short nap can
sleep comfortably here or cuddleup
and relax with a soft toy after
lunch if they need to. |
